Life stages

Eating well through pregnancy, and recovering properly after it

Pregnancy nutrition is not about eating for two. It is about getting the right things in at the right stage, managing the symptoms that make eating difficult, and then rebuilding your own reserves once the baby arrives.

Sound familiar?

A healthy, joyful pregnancy — not a restricted one.

Trimester by trimester

First trimester. Folate, B12 and iron matter most, and nausea usually matters more. The work here is often finding anything you can keep down, eating small and frequent, and protecting hydration.

Second trimester. Appetite generally returns. This is when we build properly — protein, iron, calcium, and enough fibre to stay ahead of constipation. It is also when gestational diabetes screening happens, and where a plan can genuinely change the outcome.

Third trimester. Smaller, more frequent meals as space runs out. Iron and calcium stay central. Heartburn and swelling are usually manageable with timing and salt adjustments.

Common problems, and what helps

  • Morning sickness — dry, salty, small and frequent; ginger; nothing on an empty stomach
  • Constipation — fibre, fluid and movement, in that order
  • Heartburn — portion size, meal timing and not lying down straight after eating
  • Gestational diabetes — carbohydrate distribution across the day, protein pairing, post-meal walking
  • Anaemia — iron-rich Indian foods, vitamin C pairing, and keeping tea and coffee away from meals
  • Excessive or insufficient weight gain — tracked against the range for your starting BMI, not a single target

Postpartum renourishment

This is the part that gets skipped. Delivery, blood loss and breastfeeding all draw heavily on reserves that were already stretched. Traditional Bihari postpartum foods are, as it happens, largely well judged — the work is usually getting enough protein and iron in, restoring gut function, and supporting milk supply without anyone going hungry.

If you are breastfeeding, your own intake needs to go up, not down. Losing weight is not the priority in the first few months; recovering is.

How I work

Pregnancy plans get revisited often, because what works in week ten rarely works in week thirty. Expect the plan to change as you move through trimesters and as your reports come in, and expect me to ask what you can actually face eating this week.
